Overview

  •  River Sisters Circle, an organization focused on cultural and environmental stewardship of the South Platte River in Denver. They aim to elevate the historic and cultural contributions of Indigenous and Chicano/Latino peoples to the river, and advocate for its protection and recognition as a living entity.

  • The primary goal of the River Sisters Congreso event held on March 23rd, 2024 was to elevate the historic and cultural contributions made by Indigenous and Chicano/Latino people to the South Platte River, and to advocate for its protection and recognition as a living entity. It was also a call to action to support the "Turquoise Necklace" project, a transformative initiative uniting communities along the river in Denver.

  • Advocacy for River Personhood: A central objective of the River Sisters Circle is to grant legal personhood to the South Platte River, they request the Denver City Council to pass an ordinance granting this status.

  • Community Engagement and Cultural Preservation: The River Sisters Circle emphasizes community engagement, particularly with Indigenous and Chicano/Latino communities. Various committees, such as the "Connections Committee" and "Sacred Living Water Circle," are formed to address different aspects of their mission. These committees focus on cultural awareness, historical education, water policy, and organizing community events like "water walks."
